I'm Back

So 1 year, 9 countries and 30 states later, I'm back. 2008 brought me around the world. I found myself in Beijing, Tokyo, Berlin, Paris and everything in between. I've gone from Arthur, Nebraska, to Perpignan, France, and back. It has been a year I couldn't have imagined in my wildest dreams. Now I'm back in Gainesville to finish my degree and start my post graduate life. I'll still be working full time, but I'll find a few moments here and there to post some pictures of where I am and who I'm with.

No better way to kick off the new year with a few shots of my friends in St. Augustine on the last day of winter break.

I covered Anne Romney's visit to Conestoga's Restaurant in Alachua, Florida for the HIgh Springs Herald. She showed up an hour late because her GPS couldn't find the place. She wasn't lying. Try google mapping Conestoga's Restaurant in Alachua, Florida. It doesn't work. That's how small Alachua is.

A couple of weeks ago I headed over to my old stomping grounds to see how their football was coming along since Tebow left. They were playing against the Bay Point Falcons from Miami. It was strange to be back in the high school mode but I always enjoy seeing Coach Lyons - the "Voice of the Panthers." Nease won 48-35.

Gator Football Reunion

Yesterday the Alligator sent me out to a press conference for the new AAFL (All American Football League). Basically, the league was created for college football players who can't play in the NFL. Shane Matthews was named as Team Florida's head coach and six former Gators signed contracts to play.

Gainesville's Finest Latin Food

Tuesday night the Alligator sent me out to take pictures at the five best Latin Restaurants in Gainesville. Two of the five were closed so here are the three that stayed open: Mi Apa, Emiliano's and Fritanga. The Alligator published the first two on September 6, 2007.

Labor Day Fishing

Charles Mayo reels in a black drum fish at the Jax Beach Pier on Labor Day. He had the day off from his construction job and decided to spend his free time fishing.

Kids watch as Wayne Wofford reels in a sting ray on the Jax Beach pier. Wofford owns his own small business and gave himself the day off for Labor Day.

Sloshball has been a hallmark event of the summer of 2007. Every Sunday night around 6:30 friends gather at the "O'linn Bar-B-Que" for baseball and beer. Now that summer is over, Fall Ball promises to offer more good times in Gainesville this semester.

Roberto Acevedo is a Cuban native who came to America in 1980. He wanders between St. Augustine and Jacksonville Beach doing odd jobs. He said he's selling palm crosses for extra cash to fix his bike. He also said he has a drinking problem. Roberto was excited to show me his new ID he just had made.

Sunday Worship

This morning dad and I headed over to St. Augustine to find the Lakeside Memorial Chapel where the Clark sisters have been doing Sunday church services for over thirty years. The church is made out of concrete block and has no roof. Von, the sister in blue, said that they began building the church in 1964 after their mother died. Pat, in pink, doesn't talk much anymore. Von and Pat were once well known musicians in St. Augustine who would play their music at different churches around town. Pat played the piano and Von the accordian. Von always dreamed that she would one day play the piano in her own church. That dream became a reality when they opened the Lakeside Memorial Chapel.

AAA of the Water

On Thursday I got to head out with Captain Tom Bradley of Sea Tow Jacksonville for the Greater Jacksonville Kingfish Tournament to do a story for The Florida Times-Union. Most of the day we just road up and down the St. Johns River Chanel but we finally got a call for a tow just before we headed in. The Plumbing Brothers Fishing Team broke down as they were waiting in line to weigh-in fish.

Berlin was once nick-named (by 15 UF students) "The Downest City in Europe." No city I have been to anywhere, for that matter, campares to the awesomeness that is Berlin.

Berlin Memorials

Berlin has some of the most beautiful and understated memorials I have ever seen. These are two of my favorites. The one at the top is the Mother of War memorial which I think beautifully displays the connection between birth and death in the way the mother cradles her wounded soldier. I like the way this statue is dedicated to all the mothers of all the wars, regardless of which side you are on. The bottom photo is of the Jewish Holocaust Memorial which is just a really interesting architecture. See for yourself.

Heiko Kirmis: Chimney Sweep Extraodinaire

In May 2007 I went to Berlin with Professor John Freeman of the Univeristy of Florida and 14 other UF students for a photojournalism class. Our purpose was to create a photo story of a Berliner. My story focused on Heiko, a Berlin Chimney Sweep. I got to spend a day stalking this Aryan as he clamored around roof tops in Berlin. On this particular day he happened to be training apprentices, hence the young Berliners in some of the photos. In March 2007 a student group at the University of Florida staged a protest against genocide in Africa by placing red balloons al over the Plaza of the Americas. These three students were caught in the middle of it as they studied in the grass.

These fisherman caught my eye one day as I was driving back to Gainesville from Ponte Vedra last spring. Getting the picture was interesting considering they spoke zero English and apparently my Spanish isn't as good as I had thought it was.
